Winterman! The latest newsletter

Hi and welcome to this weeks newsletter!

We’re diving into Smash! The missing Squire album. Last week we previewed two tracks and this week a special third track… The title is written on the reel!

Winterman!

It seems apt. It’s the middle of May and it feels like February. North wind, heating back on, coat back on.This is  the perfect week for Winterman.

'Hey! Mr. Winterman, give us back our sunshine if you can!'

The song is the penultimate track on Side Two of the forthcoming Smash LP, and if you've ever had to nervously knock on a grumpy neighbour's door to ask for your football back, you already know its beating heart.

The Rickenbacker 12-string is unmistakable. It was recorded it forty years ago as the key signature sound of songs I was writing at the time.

But now I hear it completely differently. I'm singing about the English rain while the 12-string plays the California sun underneath it the whole way through.

I left California but California didn't leave me. And when I picked up the 12-string, I was back.

Every week I’m releasing a new track from the record.

This is week two of the ‘Sunday Listening Sessions’ on Substack. Each week, a new song, with some words about where it came from and what it means now.
